Award Winning Jazz Rock Quartet Set For Scarborough Debut

26 Apr 2017

The heavyweights of contemporary jazz ‘Get The Blessing’ will be performing live at this year’s Scarborough Jazz Festival, which will be held at the iconic Scarborough Spa on 22 – 24 September.

Formed in 2000 to share a fascination with the improvisation and monophonic nature of Ornette Coleman’s earlier works, the line-up has remained the same throughout with Portishead rhythm masters Jim Barr and Clive Deamer on bass and drums respectively, Pete Judge on trumpet and Jake McMurchie on saxophone.

Since winning the famous BBC Jazz Award for best album back in 2008, the band has attracted rave reviews for their recordings and live performances.

The Bristol-based four-piece can now boast a truly international fan base. Since the release of ‘All Is Yes’ in February 2008, they’ve taken their musical vision round the world with successful tours and festival appearances in the USA, Canada, UK and across Europe.

“This is a stunning jazz rock quartet,” says Festival Director Mike Gordon. “Our audience is going to love the rhythm section with Portishead players Jim Barr and Clive Deamer – who also performs with Radiohead.”

Clive Davis of The Sunday Times sums it up well:

“Jazz Rock, yes, but not as we know it. Bands attempting to combine the two traditions often slip into gee-whizz bombast or bland modal ambience. Not so… Get The Blessing. This is fiercely intelligent music in which muted trumpet and saxophone, enhanced by thoughtful washes of electronica, perform pirouettes over refreshingly melodic vamps. Clive Deamer’s drumming is astonishingly measured and precise throughout.”

The Scarborough Jazz Festival runs from 22 to 24 September 2017. Tickets are priced at £87 (Earlybird) and £92 (General Sale). Tickets are available from www.scarboroughjazzfestival.co.uk or the Scarborough Spa Box Office (01723 821888).
